Make Your Mistakes on Paper
Many times I receive calls from prospective clients wanting to remodel their kitchen, finish a basement, or put on an addition. I enjoy meeting with them, but often they are disappointed to learn that their dreams of a new kitchen are farther away than they hope because they have not yet met with an architect. Meeting with an architect is an important step in your renovation because it allows you to properly scope the project, agree upon a budget, determine permits needed, and receive the most accurate estimates from general contractors. Today I will explain this preliminary work that must be done to get what you want from your renovation and start your project as quickly as possible!
First, find and consult with a designer or architect whose work you like and fits your aesthetic. If major structural change is planned, have them prepare scaled drawings and a detailed materials list. It is much more cost effective to make changes on paper, than in the field while your project is happening. Having it all sketched out by a professional, choosing all the materials and fixtures you want to use ahead of time, determining the right budget, will allow you to get the best results when you call the general contractors to bid on the job. This allows you to know the materials and fixtures that will be used by each contractor, plus if the prices you are comparing are truly apples to apples.
Going to a designer or architect before calling in contractors is one of the most cost effective way to get what you really want and that is always our goal for you. Call today if you need recommendations for designers or architects, we are happy to provide recommendations.
